On the western side of Oahu. We're staying here on our Hawaii (December 2012) trip.

The western side of the island is basically desert, quite the contrast from the rest of the island. Also, the towns around here (including Waianae) are kinda drab and depressing.

In the Makaha Valley. From Lonely Planet Hawaii: Makaha ("ferocious" in Hawaiian) is where big-wave surfing got its start in the 1950s. Back in the day, the valley was notorious for the bandits who waited along the cliffs to ambush passing travelers.
