Catching Crawfish

Season is late summer / early fall. Requires a fishing license.

Techniques:

  • Put a piece of hot dog on a string, lower it into the stream. You can also use a chicken neck / liver, catfood / dogfood, etc.
  • Put bait inside of an onion net, lower it into the stream. The crawfish's claws get caught as they reach in trying to get to the bait
  • Use a crawfish trap

Bay Area

Crawfish can be found in virtually every creek, stream, lake, and river in California. Go somewhere where the water is clean! They are largely invasive, so you can catch and eat as many as you'd like without guilt.

You can catch them in the Delta. Isleton hosts a crawdad festival every June.
